The Whole Earth is a wide-ranging, interdisciplinary programme that brings together perspectives from the arts, sciences and humanities to explore some of the most pressing questions of our time. Through talks, workshops, artworks and live performances, the project offers a kaleidoscopic response to contemporary global challenges, encouraging dialogue across disciplines and audiences.
Port of Call Media has worked closely with Olly Gruner, Senior Lecturer in Visual Culture at the University of Portsmouth, to document The Whole Earth events on film. Our role has been to capture not just what happens on the day, but the atmosphere, ideas and conversations that make each event distinctive. The resulting short films bring together highlights from the talks, workshops, artworks and performances, creating concise, engaging summaries that extend the life and reach of the programme beyond the events themselves.

In 2025, we produced a short film for The Trinity Test: 80 Years On, an event that examined the imagery of the mushroom cloud and reflected on the history, legacy and ongoing impact of the world’s first nuclear test on its 80th anniversary.
Previously, in 2022, we created a short film for NASA’s “Blue Marble” Photograph: Fifty Years On, revisiting the cultural, political and environmental significance of one of the most influential images ever taken, and exploring how its meaning has evolved over time.
Together, these films form an ongoing visual record of The Whole Earth programme, capturing how ideas from across disciplines can reshape the way we see our world and our place within it.
